Mount Etna eruption: Tourists flee as volcano sends huge plumes of smoke into sky

Mount Etna exhibits a Strombolian eruption, with a volcanic plume rising from the southeast crater, on Monday.

Europe’s tallest active volcano Mount Etna erupted on Monday, sending a massive plume of smoke and ash at least five kilometres into the sky.

The eruption came after increased volcanic activity was registered at 11pm on Sunday evening, according to Italian broadcaster RAI.

A lava fountain had been observed on the southeast crater. An orange aviation warning has been issued.

A pyroclastic flow – an extremely hot mixture of rock fragments, gas, and ash – was seen spreading on the slope of the mountain.

Videos on social media appeared to show tourists fleeing. There were no reports of injuries.

Mount Etna, located on Sicily’s east coast, is one of Europe’s most active volcanoes and is 3,329 meters tall.
