The song of the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee will be Neil Diamond’s hit Sweet Caroline.
The whole nation is being called upon to sing the track at street parties across the UK on Sunday, June 5.
Written by Diamond in 1969 and released in the UK in 1971, the song reached number eight in the charts and sold more than 1.2 million copies.
Sweet Caroline first became an anthem for the Boston Red Sox in 1997 and was later adopted by English football fans during the Euros 2020.
Listeners of Zoe Ball’s Radio 2 Breakfast Show voted for the “uplifting, happy” track which came out on top against other popular suggestions such as Paul McCartney’s We All Stand Together and Queen’s We Are The Champions.
Speaking on her show on Tuesday, May 24, the 53-year-old presenter described the football anthem and wedding party staple as “a song of togetherness”.
She added that she hoped around 10 million people would join in the singalong.
“We’re hoping also that loads of grassroots music groups and choirs and school bands and brass bands will learn the song and perform it too,” Ball added.
“We really want to encourage the country to all come together.”
The Radio 2 campaign to get the nation signing was in collaboration with the Together Coalition, which organised last year’s ‘Thank You Day’, celebrating people who helped the nation during the pandemic.
This year, the day will take place on the same day as the final Jubilee celebrations on June 5.
