The Duke of Sussex has been seen for the first time in public since returning to the UK, when he arrived at the inaugural Invictus Spirit Awards in London.
Prince Harry was dressed in black tie and wearing his military medals, posing for photographs in front of the press and then for selfies when he arrived at the event held at Old Royal Naval College in Greenwich.
It is the first public engagement he has attended since he moved back to the UK two weeks ago.
He is also due to attend the launch of the Invictus education programme INSPIRE, as well as take part in the annual WellChild Awards later this month.
His itinerary was confirmed earlier this month as he looked set to settle into life back in the UK with his wife Meghan and their two children.
The duke’s return has already caused a minor spat with the wider Royal Family.
A letter from the Royal Household earlier this month stating they Sussexes would not be given any security as they live their lives as private citizens.
The duke and duchess, who are waiting to hear whether they will be given taxpayer-funded security, are reported to prefer the term “public figures” instead.
At the launch of the INSPIRE programme, Harry will play pickleball with school pupils and participate in an assembly.
Designed by teachers for learners from early years through to Key Stage 5, the programme uses the Invictus Games and the stories of its competitors to create national curriculum-aligned resources in maths, English, Stem, art, performing arts, sport and PSHE (personal, social, health and economic) education.
Harry has been patron of WellChild – the national charity for seriously ill children and their families – since 2007 and regularly attends the awards ceremony.
The engagement is described as “continuing his long association with WellChild as the charity’s patron”, with the awards, which he has attended 15 times, being a “significant part of his annual programme”.
Harry and Meghan stepped away from the working monarchy six years ago in search of personal and financial freedom in the US.
When they moved back, they enrolled their children Archie and Lili in British schools, with Meghan rumoured to be returning to acting again.
Their children’s school term got off to a rocky start, as the security car that followed the family got separated from them during the chaos of the school drop-off.
ITV News reported earlier this month that the security concerns were so large that the family opted to start their children in a different school the next day.
The Sussexes are expected to receive an official risk assessment following their return, according to reports.
In January 2020, Harry and Meghan had announced they intended to step back as “senior” members of the royal family, become financially independent, still support Queen Elizabeth II, but split their time between the UK and North America.
But the late Queen ruled at the Sandringham Summit, which was convened to resolve the Megxit crisis, that the couple could not be half in and half out – and the King recently said the agreement still stands.
