Record-breaking temperatures expected across Spain and Italy as holiday season in full swing

With holiday season in full swing, I thought it would be worth pointing out the extreme heat set to sweep Spain and Italy in the coming days, which could be record-breaking.

Temperatures are now peaking around 50C in parts of north Africa and the Middle East, and some of this extraordinary heat is heading for southern Europe.

If you’re just about to jet off to the Costa del Sol to the popular beach spots of Torremolinos or Fuengirola, temperature will peak around 35-38C in the coming days. The islands of Ibiza, Menorca and Majorca will be in the mid 30s, with the north of Majorca probably the top spot with 36-37C possible in Alcudia and Puerto Pollensa.

Further north along the Costa Blanca and the resorts of Benidorm and Alicante, as well as the Costa Brava and Salou temperatures will be somewhere around 32-35C.

Away from the popular resorts on the coasts, inland temperatures could reach 42-45C in the likes of Granada and Seville. Records are likely to be broken in the next few days.

The heat will move towards southern Italy this weekend and early next week with temperatures again reaching the low 40s in inland areas of the country.

Climate change has increased the risk of heatwaves and Spain has really been feeling the full force of them in recent years with record breaking temperatures, and it’s not just for heat. Spain hit a record low in 2021 when an astonishing -46C recorded in the north west of the country. This was also the same winter where Madrid had its heaviest 24-hour snowfall with 50cm recorded in the capital.

Sometimes these plumes of warm air can spread north to reach the UK but unfortunately, or fortunately if you don’t like the heat, this will not be heading our way this time. Our weather will be dominated by low pressure for the foreseeable with showery and changeable conditions continuing until at least the end of July with no return to the hot June conditions anytime soon.
