Trump: UK visit may happen in September after invite from 'friend' King Charles

It comes as the US president hosts Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni at the White House to discuss tariffs on Italy and the EU.

US President Donald Trump has said he “may” visit the UK in September after being invited by the King.

Speaking in the Oval Office on Thursday, Trump told reporters that it was an “honour” to be a friend of the King and his family.

“I was invited by the King and the country – great country.

“It’s an honour… I’m a friend of Charles, I have great respect for King Charles and the family, William, we have really just a great respect for the family.

“And I think they’re setting a date for September.”

This comes after plans are being drawn up for a state visit to the US by King Charles and Queen Camilla in 2026, as the UK government looks to make the most of Trump’s fondness for the Royal Family.

Early talks were said to be underway on both sides of the Atlantic, with the new UK Ambassador in Washington, Lord Peter Mandelson, tasked with pushing the plans forward.

Earlier on Thursday, Trump met with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni at the White House to discuss his 10% tariffs on Italy and the European Union.

Trump said he was in “no rush” to agree to trade deals with European countries, insisting tariffs make the US “wealthy”.

He remains convinced that his tariff policies will deliver record wealth for the US, despite falling markets, rising interest on national debt, and warnings from business leaders of price hikes and job cuts, which many see as a growing threat to the global economic order.
