Two people dead after 'suspicious' explosion in house

A major incident has been declared, but it is not a suspected terrorist incident, Avon and Somerset Police said.

Two people have died following an explosion at a residential address in Bristol, police have said.

The cause is being treated as suspicious and a major incident has been declared, Avon and Somerset Police said in a statement.

The explosion was reported on Sterncourt Road, in the Frenchay area of Bristol, at about 6.30am on Sunday.

It is not being treated as a suspected terrorist incident, police said.

“Given the recent change to the UK threat level, we would like to reassure the public from the outset we are not treating this as a suspected terrorist incident,” the force said.

The two people who died are both adults and their families have been updated, the police said.

Officers are not looking for anyone else in connection with the explosion and a cordon remains in place at the scene.

Residents living within an area cordoned off by police are being evacuated to a temporary rest centre.
