Andrew Lloyd-Webber has confirmed his eldest son has died, following an 18-month battle with cancer.

The 75-year-old shared the news on Twitter on Saturday evening, writing: “I am shattered to have to announce that my beloved elder son Nick died a few hours ago in Basingstoke Hospital.

“His whole family is gathered together and we are all totally bereft.”

It comes after the Oscar-winning composer revealed last week that Nicholas, 43, was “critically ill” and had been moved to hospice.

Nicholas was diagnosed with gastric cancer 18 months ago and had been fighting the illness ever since.

Also a composer, he scored music for an adaption of The Little Prince, and was previously nominated for a Grammy alongside his father, Greg Wells and David Zippel for Lord Lloyd-Webber’s Cinderella.

The news comes after Lord Lloyd Webber said in an Instagram video on Thursday that his son was “over the worst of this first bout of pneumonia” which he caught as a result of his “ghastly” cancer.

Andrew Lloyd-Webber’s first wife, Sarah Hugill, is the mother of Nicholas. They also share a daughter, Imogen.
